Bum Interviews: The Noel Thurman Interview | Now that "The 9/11 Commission Report" is out, and Noel has lifted her media embargo, we thought now would be a good time to grab some time with her for a quick interview.
|
|
 | | Scraps: So tell us a little bit about your character in “The 9/11 Commission Report”.
Noel: I play FBI agent Dana Monahan, one of the FBI agents who captures Moussoui on his expired warrant. Basically I am pretty cut and dry, by the book. If you can't follow protocol than I may have to hit you upside the head with the Constitution! Well not me personally but Dana would she is a tough lady. But as a woman in the FBI you need to stand your ground! In the scenes I am the one who is always pointing out what I know, and what we are legally allowed to do, in terms of what evidence we had at that time..
Scraps: You really pulled off the FBI agent character well. Was there anyone, real or fictional, that you based her on?
Noel: I do have to say I did read some of The Commission Report, skimmed I should say .So; I had to do some research. I can’t say I based her off any one person however my character was originally written for a man I wanted to make her tough, with attitude but not to much, and still a Lady. This is a woman in the field so she still needs to be powerful, believable and smart with great sense of who she is in the world, so that part was easy! I have always thought of myself as a politician, I just have too many skeletons to ever run for office, if Eliza runs I will be her running mate, as I thought she did an excellent job! Kudos to her! Leigh writes a great script so just learning the dialogue was a task in itself he is a great believer in strong female parts! This makes creating the character much easier.
Scraps: Can you tell us where you were when the attacks occurred?
Noel: I was in bed (I was on California time) so the last plane hit as I was just waking up I was in such shock, my boyfriend at the time was a pilot for American so I was calling him in a panic, when he got a hold of me all I could do was cry I was a mess that day it changed a lot of things I knew our lives would never be the same.
Scraps: There have been several adaptations & dramatizations of the events leading up to 9/11, the attacks themselves, and the aftermath. As a country, do you think we’re ready to exam this period in our history after only 5 years?
Noel: Why not, I am not put on this earth to tell someone what movie they can or cannot make I have heard stories it’s to early don’t capitalize. No one has to watch the movie if they disagree with the film that is the great thing about our country is freedom of choice! 9/11 affected the whole world it was an attack on our country soil I am sure to some it still hurts and will always hurt. Just as the holocaust did and always will.. My feelings in regards to why make this movie …Well people are still in the dark of what we knew at that time, and things we could have done. As for recreating 9/11 that is painful moment that we have recorded live People don’t have to watch it, if it is too painful, some people may want recreation for there own knowledge or piece of mind, morbid or not. As for filmmakers profiting off these movies I can’t speak for any of them. I do know that Leigh is extremely well politically informed and has a lot of knowledge on the facts. I really think this was another dream film to make something different. My hope is to bring awareness to some of the politically unaware! | | | | Scraps: Alright, this is way too somber; this is supposed to be fun! Let’s try and lighten it up a bit. What was the last movie you watched that made you laugh out loud?
Noel: Wait I need a therapy session..Ok I am back therapist says hello by the way! Umm last movie was called “Ellie Parker” starring Naomi Watts, I just have to say some of the things she does are so hysterical I was laughing so hard I was crying seriously she plays an actress that is completely out of her mind. It was a very bizarre film with a documentary feel almost unscripted. Every actress should rent it you finally feel like you weren’t crazy after all!
Scraps: Is there any truth to the story that blondes have more fun?
Noel: Blondes have more fun but Redheads get the job done!!! I am a redhead today, I have been red before and people go CRAZY over the red hair, it’s almost cult like. Maybe I should run a small country. Land of the redheads and we all have special powers like Wonder woman!
Scraps: Let’s say you’re home alone, when suddenly zombies are beating down your door. What’s the first thing you grab to defend yourself, and second, what song is playing in your head as you fight off the undead horde?
Noel: I don’t need to grab anything because I have special powers I would just put my invisible cloak on , timely lock those pesky zombies in the home, blow up the home, all while humming to The Gap Band “You dropped them bomb on me ” then collecting my homeowners insurance and buying a bigger house. You see that is the mind of a super hero!
Scraps: You’re in a club, and the DJ starts playing a favorite tune of yours. Do you rush out on the dance floor, or sit at your table and tap your foot?
Noel: I would STAMPEDE out to the dance floor taking humans out one by one! Take no prisoners is my club motto.
Scraps: Working on any cool projects you can tell us about right now?
Noel: Always trying to keep busy I just finished a short film I also do commercials I start shooting one next week and of course still writing, or trying to, more likely! And of course all my lip syncing and Air guitar competitions I compete at! I may go to American Idol next year they would never even know the difference that’s how good I am!
Scraps: Do you ever Google your own name?
Noel: Always I do it everyday to see how popular I am then finally maybe I fit in with the cool kids and sit at there table for lunch!
Scraps: Any creepy fan stories (the ones that don’t involve us, of course) to share with us?
Noel: Everyday I am being chased by young 20 year old boys with no shirts on It is really hard to get out of my garage sometimes because they sleep on the sidewalk waiting for me, I say "excuse my young hot boy with no shirt on and rock hard abs, please go away I can’t take it anymore". No really my fans are mostly really cool and down to earth people. I guess Comicon was quite an adventure that will be as far as I go with that! | | | | Scraps: We’re thinking of throwing a costume party this year for Halloween. What costume would you wear?
Noel: I would go as Monopoly because board games are always fun!
Scraps: What advice do you have to the aspiring actors/actresses of the world?
Noel: I get this question a lot If you want to be an actor/actress my feeling is do it, take classes, theatre,do local theatre, don’t talk about it do it, and don’t give up if you do (give up that is) you weren’t meant to be an actor! Also move to LA or New York that is where most of the work is!
Scraps: One thing that I’ve always liked about Asylum flicks is their strong female characters. Today, women are cast as action heroes, authority figures, and villains. Have we reached a level of equality in the sexes in Hollywood, or is there still some more work to do?
Noel: I think the people at Asylum have a general respect for woman and love strong female characters. That is one of the many great things about working for them So first and foremost I have to Thank David Michael Latt David Rimawi Sherri Strain and Leigh Scott for the roles that Leigh created and directed and the producers for giving me the chance is this my Oscar speech…oh wait wrong cue card.
As for the rest of Hollywood we have come along way, but are still not at the level of equality that we should be at. There are not many female directors, maybe a few, but that is it. Then there is the money, men are still making more money. Also the heads of the studios we have more women thanks to Sherri Lansing who paved the way, but a female head of studio still does not make as much as a man whom is head of the studio. As for actors, for every 20 male parts there is 1 female part. So we aren’t quite there yet! I say yet because when I run this country things will have to change!
Scraps: Noel, I’m glad we finally had a chance to chat, and would love to do it again soon! Any parting words before we head out?
Noel: Well it was so political to start out with, so our parting words will be “Vote Noel for President” - oh wait, not that one….umm ok this is good …go rent “The 9/11 Commission Report” at your local blockbuster and thank you Scraps for having me you are always a good fan, and I think the shrink said you’re next. See you at the movies! |
