There have been many geniuses of comedy in our time. Jack Benny, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Darrel... What?!? You do not know who Darrel is, well neither did I until recently. I recently received a sorry excuse of a DVD collection set (3 DVD-Rs in white sleeves, with a cut out of the head of host Darrel on the disk), called THE DARREL SHOW; 5th ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR. This was a short lived show that, from the looks of it, was shown on some public access channel in Arizona. I had no clue what the hell I was getting into when I popped disk one of the 3 disk set in. To my surprise I found a show that while being overall stupid as hell, had many nuggets of comic genius slip through.

The show is set up with host Darrel interviewing some individuals, fake or real, throws in some short movies, location segments, sports events, short skits, and ends in the final dance-in-front-of-a-green-screen closing credits. Like I said, this show is stupid as hell, yet would be perfect to view for the drunken nights after a bar with some friends. Like Monty Python, and SCTV, some skits and moments fall flat on their face. Be patient though. Sit through some low budget, childish, unfunny moments like Satan Claus, and you may end up with the moment when Darrel asks an Asian filmmaker, that he was interviewing, if he would “Make love to him”. Now sit through the silent awkwardness, and laugh. While that may not sound too funny, trust me it is. What saves the show from being just an unfunny show, with a horrible budget, to moments of greatness is Darrel himself.

Either this guy is the greatest actor in comedy history with his dead pan, uncomfortable questioning, or he is mentally challenged, and nothing is funny about that. Well, in this case he would still be funny, but now I may have a moment of guilt laughing at him. His opening stupid joke, ala Carson, and poor dancing at the closing credits make him comedic gold. Seeing him in action made the poor packaging for the DVDs make perfect sense. Well, that and I they are free.

Since the price for this one is free, and all you have to pay is shipping and handling, then I would definitely recommend this. This show is for the fans of MTV’s THE ANDY MILONAKIS SHOW, and THE TOM GREEN SHOW. Frasier this is not. Turn down your IQ, laugh at its absurdness, and have a few beers. This got a couple laughs out of me, and for the price tag, it is worth it.
