Children of the Corn (PSP UMD)
Director: Fritz Kiersch
Screenplay: George Goldsmith
Originally Released: 1984
The Entire Plot in One Sentence: Some crazy kid gets all the other kids of some hillbilly town to murder all the adults.

One of the first novels I’ve ever read from start to finish was Stephen King’s “Night Shift”, I read through the entire thing back when I was eleven (Yes, I’ve had a weird childhood, but that’s beside the point). Night Shift itself was a collection of short stories by King himself, most (if not all) of the stories were earlier works that helped launched his writing career into what it is today. Each story was interesting and unique (some weren’t even horror stories) and had it’s own merits. One story that always caught my eye when I was a kid was “Children of the Corn”. It’s a total shame that it took me eight years to finally see the movie adaptation, on the PSP no less.

The movie is surprisingly faithful to the original story; perhaps it’s because it’s based on a short story, rather than a full-blown novel. Unfortunately, where the film deters off coarse is where it starts to go downhill.

The opening moments are excellently done, but the following thirty minutes are slow and tedious. In the traditional 1980’s horror vein, everything is set up in a tedious build up, followed by a quick pay off. Most of the movie is useless filler, followed by a small morsel of story. To make matters worse, the ending is completely rushed and is simply horrible, by any standards.

UMD Extras:
This is where Anchor bay drops the ball completely. For this UMD release, much like all Anchor Bay UMD releases, there are absolutely no extras, no features, no audio options, not even a chapter selection! There’s a menu, but it’s basically useless since all you can do is simply hit the “PLAY” button to start the movie. I’ll give the menu a half can, seeing how it’s technically a feature.
Score: ½/5 cans

Overall: A mediocre movie gets the PSP treatment, but there are no extras to speak of. Rent if you must, avoid other wise.

Final score: 1/5 cans
