This is a budget title, which means that brand new it cost's $19.99. I should have known something was amiss when it was already marked down to $12.99. But what the heck. The title shows pictures of people with weapons on motorcycles. If Road Rash taught us nothing else, it's that weapons and motorcycles mix very well.
You start out and you have all the staples of a classic racer. You choose your racer from about five or so that are unlocked. All have diffrent stats. As you progress through the levels you unlock more riders and tracks. All very normal and expected for this type of game. So I picked the best racer available based on stats. I choose a chain as my primary weapon. I get to the starting line and I am ready for mayhem.
Unfortunately, my hopes and dreams get left at the starting gate. As soon as the bell rings, all the riders take off any in mere seconds are quite seperated. You wouldn't mind this in an ordinary racer. But in a game involving weapons, you kind of expect to attack people. Well you get so spread out across the course that it is almost impossible to attack anyone. The race soon becomes just a normal race, and you forget about your weapons rather quickly.
So I am resigned to the fact that single player racing in this title is boring. Oh well, there's always multiplayer. Wrong. The first thing that goes wrong with multiplayer is that it is only two player. Then why do I have four ports and four controllers? It is far too late in this generation cycle to come out with racers that are only two player. I thought we left those days behind. Nevertheless, I'll give it a whirl. Racing a single race in multiplayer becomes really old really quick. You are the only two on the track. If somebody wrecks, you will be riding alone for the rest of the match. Luckily, there are other options.
They have a kind of battle mode, where you are on a bike in a ring and have to take down the other riders. Of course multiplayer only means two here, but at least there are some computer generated opponents as well. This actually comes off quite horribly. It ends up becoming just a train of bikes, with nobody doing much bashing. Luckily, there was yet another mode to play with. Bomb attack. This got me quite excited. I remember the bomb attack mode from Mario Kart: Double Dash and it has got to be one of the best battle modes ever. Well this version is nothing like that. It's not even multiplayer. This too, comes off as boring and stale.
Well, at least I can hang my hat on the fact that it is Live enabled. Wrong. It is live enabled but not for game playing. All you can do is post your high scores. There's not even downloadable content. What a waste. This is a very niche game. This will only appeal to the most die-hard of cheap gamers. I cannot even recommend this game to motorcycle enthusiasts. It has no realism. About the best thing I can say about this title is that it has great cover art. Added: Thursday, July 07, 2005
