So, I get an e-mail from a director saying that he works worked with my mother. Fighting words? Naw…I do have to say though, that I do not receive e-mails like that on a daily basis. He mentioned that his short film Shhh…It’s Alive was playing at a few film festivals. Always a fan of independent artists, I told him to send me a copy and I would take a look at it. Now, after watching the 15 minute short, I can say a couple things:
1. Director Ryan Cadima has some directing chops. While this is no epic Peter Jackson or Robert Redford flick, Cadima rises above the “point and shoot” method that I tend to see from no-budget flicks.
2. All involved have a pretty funny, if even borderline Troma-esque, sense of humor.
3. Some actors or acting class might wanna’ be looked at to add into the budget moving forward.
So what is the short about? Well, let’s just say the short is shit. Oh, Zing!!! (I wonder how many hacky reviewers will use puns like that. Pathetic.)
A group of friends get together to enjoy a wondrous bowl o’ chili. Unfortunately in our current world of beef, you always have to be wary of mad cow disease. Now, who knew that one effect of mad cow disease caused explosive diarrhea and a screaming fecal soldier, complete with mouth and teeth, to come ripping out of ones chest? I missed that little nugget of information on the news. Now the group of friends must survive against the murderous rampage of these turds. I shit you not Bums. (Damn puns again.)
This short is entertaining to say the least. From the subtle humorous conversations between the couples at the beginning of the short, up until the screaming turds attack. Oh, and I mean screaming too. We have turds with mouths ala Steve Oedekerk’s Kung Pow or his series of Thumb movies. Hilarious to see when it first popped up. Direction is on spot, but the acting at times is more painful to watch than a turd sliding down a victim’s throat.
While the short is…well short, the pacing moves quick, with still enough slow down at the beginning to build the foundation. Shhh…It’s Alive is currently running the festival circuit. If it hits your town, take a look at it. Murderous sheit logs with mouths is the kind of short that you just don’t miss. Low budget, funny but horrible acting from some grants this short and enjoyable 2 1/2 cans.
