I couldn’t figure out at the end of “Nympha” why I actually enjoyed it. Sure, there were a couple of gory scenes, but nothing really new. Yeah, Tiffany Shepis takes her clothes off, but save one (potential) dream sequence, the situations in which she stripped down weren’t exactly hot scenes. And we have two timelines running concurrent in the film that added an air of mystery, but you could kinda see where it was headed about half way through.

I think what actually sold me on the film was Tiffany Shepis showing some range in her acting ability. With several scenes with no lines, you know exactly what she was going through, and exactly how she felt about it. Not an Oscar worthy performance by any means, but she’s got some chops on her, and could hold her own outside the b-movie horror scene.

The movie itself was weird as hell. Young nun Sarah (Shepis) is sent to a cloistered sect of nuns by her bishop. She looks forward to getting closer to God through the strict sequestered lifestyle. What the brochure left out, however, was that Sarah’s reaffirmation of faith takes place after the nuns mangle her, leaving her a blind, deaf mute with no use of her hands. I’d leave that part out of the sales pitch too, though.

As Sarah loses her senses however, she somehow tunes into the activities of the building in the past, where we learn that some really bad shit went down, all in the name of God. We get snippets of the life of Nimfa…a girl raised by her grandfather in this building, as subsequently the roots on which this weird gang of nuns came from. We see Ninfa as a child and as an adult, coping with all the strangeness going on in the house. There’s even a sick twist or two waiting for you at the top of the stairs in the creepy-ass attic. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t get queasy easy, but some of the topics explored here were pretty gross.

If you’re up for some twisted gore, confusing storyline and demented nuns – it’s worth a viewing for sure. If nothing else, check out what Tiffany Shepis can do with a little legroom. The chick can act! 3 cans out of 5.
