When I saw the cover of The Most Unromantic Man In The World I didn’t know what the hell I was in for. I mean, look at the thing. Well, I don’t mean the actual thing you sickos, but the cover. Even reading the back of the DVD I wasn’t all enticed to watch it. Of course, being a reviewer you get stuck watching hundreds of movies against your will. It comes with the job, sadly.
Now, even watching the first few minutes with our narrator walking around in Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter garb, I had a feeling that I was in for some top notch ocular sheit. I have to say it was a hell of a surprise to find that after the initial stupidness of the first few minutes, I was watching a gem of an independent film.
The film follows (in documentary form) a man deemed the most unromantic man in the world, David Lumby. He lives in a small flat with wife Doreen. He is addicted to porn, has a bad mullet, lives in a separate room from his wife (who he hasn’t touched in years) and masturbates numerous times a day. What a catch ladies!
When Doreen finally gets fed up and leaves him, David must decide to change his life around to win her back, or continue to be the prick that he is.
That’s really all there is to this movie. Following the documentary style, we meet Doreen’s friends and his (who all agree that David is an ass). The comedy comes from the fact that really no one in the movie is a winner. It’s day to day living and nothing extravagant happens.
We do have some funny everyday life moments. The father-son bonding with porn is a treat as is David and Doreen’s anniversary. On their anniversary, David takes Doreen to a fast food joint and buys her a porn, while she invested in some hard to find soccer tickets for him. This of course is the straw that breaks their relationship’s back and she leaves him. This is the time when you wait and watch to see if in fact he does turn himself around to win her back.
I wouldn’t call this one a mockumentary because in my eyes a mockumentary has a spoof or certain comic take on a subject. This is someone turning on a camera and being filmed. That’s it. Sure it’s just a movie and these are all actors, but like most reality shows, you become like a voyeur watching the shitness that is David. While none of the characters could be classified as stand-up citizens, there is a certain quality to some and it does suck you in.
Overall I had a good time with the movie. It is very low budget, has no real plot, but damn did I laugh and stick with it to the bitter end. This won’t be for everyone with the lack of any real plot, but just kick back and enjoy. Hell, I even found moments from watching David that struck a cord in me. Well, I didn’t but my wife pointed out some comparisons. The Most Unromantic Man In The World is a solid rent of 3 cans.
